Scott Pilgrim and the BIG GIANT FLAW

Journal Entry: Tue Aug 17, 2010, 1:59 PM
Went to see it today, as you might expect, and totally loved it.  Well, almost totally.

Interaction between Scott and his bandmates: Great

Interaction between Scott and his roommate: Great

Interaction between Scott and his sister: Great

Interaction between Scott and his opponents: Fantastic

Interaction between Scott and Knives: AWESOME!!

Interaction between Scott and Ramona:  Uh...what interaction?

Seriously, there was more of a connection between him and Envy than him and Ramona, so why are we supposed to buy him and Ramona as OTP except "the author said so"?

Even worse, when he was with Knives, they were so awesome together, and Scott was at his most interesting, which calls the total lack of awesome between him and Ramona into sharp relief.  Which is a shame, because both of them were good around everyone else (well, whenever Ramona got screen time, that is).

Oh well, I still give the movie an A+ despite that.  Now when do we get a Knives movie, because she's JUST THAT AWESOME.

Let's play a jolly game of "What's the real motive behind this?"

You can bet it doesn't have much to do with loving the community or wanting to make things better for stock artists, that's a given.

Points!

Journal Entry: Tue Jun 8, 2010, 1:33 PM
Uh...yeah.  Looks like people are starting to sell favs and features for points.  So it's not really based on quality, it's based on what you can get out of it, and the folks who run dA get more in their pocket, while providing us with reduced service painted over with gloss.

Yeah, as if I weren't getting disillusioned with this place enough...

So let's see

Journal Entry: Tue May 18, 2010, 8:02 PM
What does the wonderful v7 bring to the table?

Poor layout of deviations
Loss of message notification functionality
Loss of forward/back functionality
Loss of search bar on profile pages
Most browser plugins broken
Loss of resolution in many deviations
Whole new set of bugs to fix
No auto-fullview for deviations
Truncated artist comments
Slowdowns for many users
Possible difficulty with older machines
Nag message when faving deviations
Two comment boxes on the profile page for some reason

And I'm sure I'm missing a few.  I can grudgingly get used to the fugly top bar with the needless rearranged links, but the rest of it is pretty negative.

Can anyone think of anything this has done to make the site more usable, or look better?

A bumper crop

Journal Entry: Mon Apr 19, 2010, 6:55 PM
Well, it looks like I might have overdone things a wee tiny bit at the Labyrinth sale today.  I spent more than double what I'd planned when I started, but honestly I can't be sorry about it.  And that's not even counting the two that were birthday gifts, heh.

So here's a list of the schwag:

Chris Sanders Sketchbook 2 & 3
Three Pierre Alary Sketchbooks
Sinbad tome 1 by Pierre Alary and Christophe Aleston
Mucha's Figures Décoratives
Directing the Story by Francis Glebas
Bridgeman's Complete Guide to Life Drawing by George Bridgeman
1000 Nävis by Philippe Buchet

That last one is sort of my guilty purchase, actually.  It was pretty expensive, so went a long way to blowing my budget, but sooooo worth it!!  300 pages of Buchet illustrating the signature character that's so far appeared in no less than 23 graphic novels to date, with more expected to come.  As much as I've been wanting the Bridgeman book for a long time, and as much as I love the Alary and Sanders sketchbooks, I'd say this has to be today's jewel.

This should be interesting

Journal Entry: Fri Apr 2, 2010, 11:36 AM
A little while after Coraline came out, Laika laid off their entire CG staff.  Shortly after that, Henry Selick left the company.

So now it comes out that Selick has just signed an exclusive deal with Disney/Pixar to make stop-motion for them instead.

So I figure that's great for Disney/Pixar, they've got a hot name with a remarkably different style than what they've been putting out to date.  But what's that gonna mean for Laika, what have they got left?  Will they still be around in a couple of years, or will they go the same way CORE Digital did, in a puff of blue smoke?

Journal Entry: Wed Mar 24, 2010, 7:30 PM
In order for me to live up to Tom's expectations, in addition to getting the animation work done for that class, I will need to have started this assignment two months ago and have an extra two days added to the week.

It'll take me five HUNDRED drawings to get that far.

Dammit, either dA or Chrome!

Journal Entry: Tue Feb 16, 2010, 3:07 PM
So I decided I was gonna give the Google Chrome browser a try, since Firefox was annoying me, and honestly it seems good so far.  Except for one, tiny little problem.

I can't see my new Deviations.

Top of the screen, it says "3 Deviations".  No problem.  I click on it, go to the Message Centre and...nothing.  Nothing at all.  The page loads, and that's the end of it.  No thumbs display, no links, I have no way to get to my new Deviations without shutting down and going back to Firefox.

Anyone know anything about this problem?

Edit:  FFS, it was AdBlock all along.  Got it fixed now.

On to the next stage

Journal Entry: Thu Dec 24, 2009, 5:59 AM
Another hurdle cleared!  I just got my marks today for first term, and they're actually better than I'd expected.

Animation Design: A+
Practices & Principles: A
Enviro: A-
Life Drawing: B+
Animation Drawing: C+

I had been worried about Drawing, since I had a lot of problems with the last assignment and it was worth a huge chunk of the mark, but apparently it turned out in the end.  Certainly enough to get me to next semester, and that's what's really important.

Got it all organized! ...ish

Journal Entry: Sat Oct 24, 2009, 9:33 AM
I just started a new journal at Dreamwidth, for anyone who's interested.  It'll be mostly about school related stuff (and work, after I graduate), while my regular blog will be about sketches and art.  Random brain farts will go on my Twitter, and more substantial brain droppings and community stuff will go here and my FA journal.

Think that's about the lot.  Nice to have it all organized to some degree.  Now to just wait until it all fall apart.  XD

Got my marks back for the bouncing ball animation I did for school.  74%, which was one of the highest marks in the class.  Now of course the pressure is on to meet or exceed that in the rest of the assignments this term.
